• Gail Workman Park serves as the primary neighborhood park in Masaryktown. This small, tranquil community park is designed mainly for local families and residents. It features a playground and a simple area for children to play, enjoy a picnic, or spend time outdoors. More than just a recreational facility, the park acts as a gathering spot for the neighborhood.

• Cypress Lakes Preserve is a natural area close to Masaryktown, especially attractive to hikers, bird watchers, and those interested in Florida's native landscapes. The preserve boasts walking trails, seasonal wildflowers, and chances for wildlife observation. It maintains a more natural and undeveloped feel compared to a typical neighborhood park. The Withlacoochee State Trail stands out as one of the region's key recreational assets. This paved trail stretches approximately 47 miles across Central Florida and is popular for biking, walking, running, skating, horseback riding, and wildlife viewing. It meanders through various natural communities, offering a serene alternative to road-based activities.

• Withlacoochee State Forest is located near Masaryktown and provides some of the area's best opportunities for outdoor recreation. The forest encompasses about 164,000 acres across several counties and contains pine forests, oak hammocks, wetlands, lakes, and portions of the Withlacoochee River. Activities include hiking and nature walks, bicycling, horseback riding, fishing, canoeing and kayaking, camping and picknicking. The forest is particularly attractive for people who prefer natural, uncrowded outdoor recreation rather than developed parks.

• Lake Townsen Regional Park is another substantial recreation destination in the surrounding area. The park encompasses 37 developed acres plus approximately 338 acres of open space and is surrounded by wooded land, the state forest, and the Withlacoochee River. It offers hiking, jogging, bicycling, horseback riding, fishing, boating, picnicking, playgrounds, baseball/softball, basketball, volleyball, and horseshoes. It also provides access to the Withlacoochee State Trail.

• Croom Tract of Withlacoochee State Forest provides an especially large natural recreation area southeast/east of the Masaryktown area. It contains more than 20,000 acres of cypress and longleaf-pine forest and approximately 13 miles of the Withlacoochee River. Popular recreation areas within the tract include Silver Lake, Hog Island, River Junction, Iron Bridge, and East Croom. Silver Lake is particularly popular for boating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hiking, and picnicking, with more than 30 miles of Croom Loop trails nearby.

Community Overview

Masaryktown is a quaint, historic unincorporated community in southern Hernando County, situated along U.S. 41 close to the Pasco County border. This charming community exudes a distinctly rural, small-town vibe.

What sets Masaryktown apart from other Florida communities is its rich Czech and Slovak heritage. Founded between 1924 and 1926 by Czech and Slovak immigrants primarily from New York and Pennsylvania, it was created as a farming community. The settlers named the area after Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the first president of Czechoslovakia.

The original vision for Masaryktown was that of an agricultural colony. They began by planting extensive citrus groves, but unfortunately, repeated freezes took a toll on the crops. As a result, residents shifted their focus to vegetable farming and poultry, with chicken and egg production eventually becoming the mainstay of the local economy. At one time, Masaryktown was recognized as a significant egg-producing hub in Florida.
