St. Leo, Florida (Pasco County)

Residential Architecture & Housing Style

St. Leo's neighborhoods are characterized by:

  • Traditional Florida suburban homes built primarily from the 1970s through the 2000s.

  • Mediterranean and Florida Contemporary styles, featuring stucco exteriors, tile or shingle roofs, arched entryways, and covered lanais.

  • Large custom homes around the nearby Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club, many with Mediterranean, Tuscan, or Spanish Revival influences.

  • Older ranch-style homes on larger lots in the adjoining communities of San Antonio and Dade City.

  • Mature oak trees, palms, and generous landscaping give many neighborhoods a well-established appearance rather than the dense "cookie-cutter" look common in newer Florida developments.

Shopping

St. Leo itself has very little retail beyond university-related shops:

  • Saint Leo University Campus Store for school apparel, gifts, and books.

  • St Leo Abbey Gift Shop for religious items and locally made gifts.

For everyday shopping, residents typically drive 10–25 minutes:

  • Dade City (10 minutes): grocery stores, pharmacies, local boutiques, restaurants, and antique shops.

  • Wesley Chapel (20–25 minutes):

    • Shoppes at Sunlake Centre at the corner of FL-54 and Sunlake Blvd.

    • Collier Commons at the corner of FL-54 and Collier Pkwy.

    • Tampa Premium Outlets FL-56 near I-75.

    • The Shops at Wiregrass at the corner of Bruce B Downs Blvd and FL-56.

Community Overview

St. Leo is a quaint little town located in eastern Pasco County, approximately 35–40 miles north of downtown Tampa. Even though it has a small population of around 2,300 residents, it boasts a unique character thanks to Saint Leo University and the historic Saint Leo Abbey. The town offers a serene, semi-rural ambiance with gently rolling hills, which is somewhat rare for central Florida. It's not particularly ideal for those looking for walkable shopping areas or nightlife, as most dining, entertainment, and major shopping options require a short drive. However, the trade-off is a tranquil environment with mature landscaping, historic buildings surrounding the university and abbey, along with relatively easy access to both Tampa and Florida's Nature Coast.

Parks, Nature and Outdoor Recreation

Although St. Leo is small, there are several pleasant outdoor destinations nearby:

  • Saint Leo Abbey and Benedictine Monks grounds — peaceful walking areas with historic buildings.

  • Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes and Gethsemane Grotto — a quiet landscaped devotional garden that many visitors enjoy for reflection.

  • Lake Jovita provides scenic views throughout the area.

  • Nearby Pasco County parks offer playgrounds, sports fields, hiking, and picnic facilities, with larger nature preserves available within a short drive.

  • Within about 20–30 minutes you'll also find the Withlacoochee State Trail, Green Swamp conservation lands, and several county parks for hiking, cycling, kayaking, and wildlife viewing.
